Should We Get a Dog?

My husband, Jay, and I have been without a pet for about ten years. We actually liked not being tied down to an animal. We were free to come and go as we pleased. During our parenting years (we raised three boys) we had had many pets; mostly dogs, but also fish, rats, one cat that didn’t last very long, lizards, birds, rabbits and chickens. I don’t think I am leaving anything out.

One reason we hadn’t gotten a pet in so long is because our last pet, a dog named Quin, was the most amazing animal we had ever known. We called him Quin the Wonder Dog. One of our sons, Joshua, then around 13 yrs old, had found him in a park near our house. He was dirty and skinny, but was very sweet and had bonded very quickly to Joshua. I told our son that we would take care of the dog until we found his owner. After a couple of weeks of looking, no owner showed up and we were all attached to Quin. He was a Queensland Heeler mix; the smartest dog we had ever been around. He really did become a member of the family. We had him for about 12 years when he died of old age. So the next ten years were pet free and we got very used to it. Our kids were all grown and out of our home, with families and pets of their own. We found that we did not particularly miss the little pitter patter of paws at all. Then, as our community changed over the years and we began to see more crime, we started to think that a dog might be a good deterrent to someone who would try to break into our home. We had already experienced our car being stolen. So, after much discussion and pondering, we set out to find the right dog. This blog, then, is our journey from dogless to dog owners. I will be posting regularly about the adventures with our new pet. I will also have tips for dog care and dog training along with videos and other articles that I have found helpful and should be helpful to other owners. Please, before you leave the site, enter a comment about something that you have read here, or something you might like to know about that I could put on the blog. Enjoy, Karen Start with the post How We Met Our New Dog, then go up from there to get each post in order.
