Perfume and Roses

When we first got Rio, as you read in my post “Dog Stuff”, I had to buy all the things necessary for taking care of a dog. That included dog food. At Wal-Mart I found big bags of dog food at relatively cheap prices. I looked them over, comparing the ingredients with the more popular, well-known brands, and didn’t notice much difference in them. So…I bought the cheap one. Well…after Rio had been with us for a couple of weeks we noticed a very stinky smell in the room ever so often. The smell was so strong that we cleared the room quickly until we felt it safe to go back comfortably. The smell was coming from Rio, and it was definitely something you couldn’t ignore. We decided it was his diet that was causing the problem and so we started to investigate.

We found that we should not buy dog food that has corn as the first ingredient on the list. Guess what the first ingredient was on the dog food I bought. You guessed it! We also read that lamb was a good ingredient to look for. I found a great article in Mother Earth News that gave a lot of helpful information about dog food. Click HERE to read it. So we went back to the store to find a better food so we could quit evacuating our home every time Rio passed gas.

Did I do something wrong?

We changed his diet and the problem lightened up tremendously! He is not all perfume and roses smelling, but he is considerably better than he was. I’m sure he must feel better too. Not to mention, our odd behavior of jumping up and running out of the room has diminished and has made him less stressed about his owners’ mental states.
