Rio the Digger

Wet dirt = mud = COOL place to lay

We now have another “issue” with Rio. Digging. I know… digging comes with owning a dog. They like to dig in the cool dirt to lie down in. They have an instinct to dig to bury their bones. I get that, and I make room in my yard for THAT kind of digging. I want him to understand WHERE it is alright to dig, and WHERE it is NOT!

The shady place along the back side of the house where the cooler drips water on the dirt…that is okay. A hole in the MIDDLE of my lawn…that is NOT!

The dirt pile along the back of the yard is an okay place to bury his bones. The corner of my herb garden is NOT!

The dirt on the side of the house where nobody goes and no one sees…he can dig there to his heart’s content. Jumping up in my raised garden bed, tearing down the cover I made to shade my plants, pulling out my zucchini plant, and digging a big hole is NOT okay!

When I go out in the yard and see that he has done one of the “not okay” things, his body language and the look on his face tells me that he already knows that he did something really BAD. I don’t even have to scold him. He acts sorry for the rest of the day

We need to come to a happy compromise. I need to figure out how to let him know where he can dig and where he cannot dig. I will have to research the experts and come up with something I can try and then get back with you to let you know how it went.

Jay will probably have his camera poised and ready for this event.

Gosh . . . ya know it’s just HARD growing up, isn’t it??? Rio is such a cute ‘kid’, Karen, I don’t know why going out & diggin’ around some is such a BIG deal ‘;^) Poor pup is just having fun. Besides . . . look how LONG it’s taken you to ‘train’ ME!!! (are we done yet?;^)
Loved these two training videos. Similar technique to the gal that does the “Me OR the Dog” show on TV.

I feel your pain, Karen. Arianne, has pot holes all over the yard. I try to keep a bag of “filler” for the yard. She has not dug in my garden tho. I have made that spot mine. She has the rest of the yard. But she does steal the veggies and eats them. Summer time, I can’t keep the holes filled to keep up with her.
