We have quite a neighborhood full of dogs…all types. I know that it has been said that dogs become a reflection of their owners, some even looking like them. Well, if that is true, we have some pretty interesting neighbors! We haven’t met most of them, but we have sure gotten a rousing introduction to their dogs since we have been walking Rio.
Next door is a little, white, fluffy poodle. That dog is very “talkative” when in the backyard. She is into everyone’s business and doesn’t miss a thing. She barks and barks the whole time she is outside…hardly taking a breath. When we or Rio are in the yard, this dog is constantly barking at us. Mostly, Rio just walks away and ignores her. I don’t think he likes all her gossip.
Then there are the dogs on the other side of us. There are three of them, and they are rowdy! They are mixed breeds, not proud, or pretentious. They want you to know that they are there, and THAT is THEIR yard! When Rio goes out into the yard they bark very aggressively at him. There is a broken board in the fence where they can look through at each other. Rio usually goes up to that hole in the fence and looks at them very calmly. After jumping up and down and making an extreme amount of racket, they all sniff their greeting to Rio through the fence and calm down for the rest of the day. I think Rio kind of rolls his eyes at them and tells them to “chill out.”
On the corner, on our way to the park, there is another pit bull. This one is the more aggressive type. He lives in the backyard, behind a chain link fence, so everything that goes by in the street is a threat to his territory. He doesn’t just bark at us, he comes out of nowhere and charges the fence. His bark is very vicious sounding. It startles me every time. Again, Rio has very little response to this dog. He turns his head toward him, very bored-like, and gives him a look as if saying to him, “Get a life!”
Then there are the young dogs at the dog park–Rio’s buddies. There is a very pretty young pit bull female with blue eyes that he is quite smitten with. There is also a lanky, young weimaraner that Rio loves to wrestle with. And there is a small Australian Shepherd mix that likes to be a part of the gang. They all can play together non-stop until the owners have all had enough and take them home.
We have met the owners of the dog park dogs, and I must say that we like them as much as Rio likes their dogs…Well, maybe not that much!
