In reading our new dog’s history from the information given to us by H.A.L.T., we found out that his original name was Rambo. The rescuers thought that it was too aggressive of a name for such a gentle dog, so they renamed him Hitch. Neither Jay nor I liked either of the names, but we didn’t have a clue what would be the right name. Our daughter-in-law, Sharron, suggested the name Copper. We liked it, but his color just didn’t seem right for that name. So I went to the computer to do a search for dog names.
Jay had thought that because his original name ended in “O”, we should look for something similar with the same sound at the end. That might make it easier for him to get used to. So I began looking for things that ended in ‘O’. Cheerio, hello, no (he learned that word really fast!) rainbow, burrito, nacho…I don’t think so!
Then I started thinking about categories that we like. How about chilies! Anyone who knows Jay knows that he is a “chili head”. We have a whole shelf in our hutch devoted to hot sauces. So I explored the names of chilies. We have jalapeño, habanero, Serrano…Serrano might work. Then I saw that Serrano was also a name for a coffee. Wait a minute…coffee is another thing we are fond of. Maybe we could find a coffee name ending in an O.
Well, as I looked through the many coffee names I found one that looked like it might be it…Rio. It was a nice, short name. Very similar sounding to Rambo. It was masculine yet not aggressive. I asked Jay what he thought and he agreed that it was right. We tried it out on the dog and he seemed to take to it very quickly.
So now we have a dog, and our dog has a name. The next step is to teach him to come when we call him. I think that is the ingredients for another post.
But first I have to get him some dog stuff.
